About Red Embedded Systems

Red Embedded Group are an SME based in West Yorkshire with an extensive pedigree in defining, developing and launching new digital consumer products. Having developed a video telephony product based on set top box technology for MyJoice in Sweden, a local application was found for similar technology with Airedale NHS Foundation Trust Hospital. Airedale NHSFT had pioneered the use of video conferencing technology, in a clinical setting, through work with prisoners. The value in the prison setting is clearly established against the costs of bringing consultants into the prison or moving inmates out.

The service to the prisons developed by Airedale NHSFT is based on professional video conferencing equipment similar to that used in a corporate setting. Using video it has been possible to reduce transfers of prisoners out of the prisons by 50-60% Airedale NHSFT have improved the care available to this ‘hard to reach’ group, whilst simultaneously reducing security risks to both, prison officers and the general public. Having proven that remote consultations can be achieved using video, the next stage was to bring care to patients in their own home.

In order to move the video capability into the home new technology was required that had the following features:

  • Be secure and offer a protected, closed service
  • Be very simple to use requiring no IT skills
  • Deliver adequate video quality over domestic broadband
  • Be lower cost, in volume, than the high-end teleconferencing and telepresence products

Red Embedded had the resources and capabilities to deliver a solution that included:

  • Development of set top box technology that uses the TV as the interface
  • Development of a simple, remote controller that works in cooperation with the user interface to make operation very simple
  • Ability to optimise video and audio for low bandwidth connections
  • Ability to manage manufacturing of consumer electronics products
  • Customisation of the patient experience to deliver educational and interactive content on a per patient basis
