Monday 22nd December, 3pm. Main

UK videophone development and technical consulting company, Red Embedded Design has obtained support from the Technology Strategy Board's Assisted Living Innovation Platform for development of technology to help medical and carer professionals look after patients and service users in their own home.

RED have already developed a commercial videophone product specifically designed for older people and now available on international markets, and now aim to make a number of improvements specifically designed for the UK medical sector. RED have teamed up with Airedale Hospital and other technology providers in a consortium which will provide a trial a system able to deliver medical services using video telephony. REDs work will include development of specific functionality and features with an emphasis on the needs of patients with long term conditions. Features will include zoom, pan and scan, call queuing, security, high quality stills and further improvements to video and audio quality while retaining a low price point. RED will also work on an advanced generation product with new silicon. The product draws on existing IP developed by RED and used in earlier Videophone devices such as the BT Videophone 1000.

Dave Taylor, founding Director of Red Embedded will be leading the project from RED and says, "We're delighted to win the Technology Strategy Board support. Ours is an exciting international business and we are confident in the need for our products as medical, carer and health insurance organisations around the world rise to the challenge of increasing numbers of older people living at home".

As well as Airedale and RED the consortium includes ADI, BTL, and FAST and the project will be clinically led with important input and advice from Richard Pope, a leading Diabetes expert with experience in developing telehealthcare initiatives over a period of years.

Richard agrees that "We have had a very successful use of videoconferencing equipment as a means of delivering medical help directly from the Hospital. This project takes this concept to the next level and I see this as a vital part of our development and indeed critical to our need to deliver service cost effectively to those who need it."

The project is expected to last for an 18 month period and will lead to commercial products suitable for a number of different markets and environments over the life of the project.
